Cloisonné Filigree Coaster Workshop
Course Description
Cloisonné Filigree is a traditional decorative art form that combines exquisite craftsmanship with vibrant enamel colors. Originating in the Yuan Dynasty and flourishing during the Ming and Qing Dynasties in China, this technique has been used to create breathtaking works of art, from vases and bowls to jewelry and ceremonial objects. The process begins with fine metal wires, typically made of copper or gold, carefully bent and shaped into intricate patterns. These wires are affixed to a metal base, forming small compartments or "cloisons." These compartments are then filled with colored enamel paste and fired at high temperatures, creating a smooth, glass-like surface with a brilliant, polished finish. About The Workshop : Designed as an introduction to this traditional Chinese art form, this session aims to provide participants with a hands-on experience that highlights the beauty and intricacy of Cloisonné and experience the art of cloisonné in a simplified, accessible format (No firing or high temperatures required with non-fired glaze). During this workshop, you will learn about the significance of Cloisonné within Chinese culture and its historical roots. You will gain insights into the materials and techniques used in this ancient craft, focusing specifically on the process of filling cloisonné compartments with vibrant enamel powders. Workshop Highlights : - Introduction to Cloisonné - Learn the history of Cloisonné, significance, and design principles - Hands-On activities to explore colour theory and create a coloured sketch - Practice enamel filling techniques with vibrant enamel powders Class Size: Maximum of six participants per class Note: - The completed filigree base will be pre-prepared by the instructor (Dunhuang Pattern) - Participants will take home their finished coaster (walnut based) at the end of the class - Workshops can be taught in English/Cantonese - ~2 hours workshop - Suitable for participants aged 10 and above - 掐絲琺瑯是一種傳統的裝飾藝術形式,將精湛的工藝與鮮豔的琺瑯色彩完美融合。
